**The XRAY5: A Post-Punk Evolution**
Emerging from the fertile post-punk scene of Los Angeles, The XRAY5 are a band that has steadily evolved, drawing from the legacy of the city's underground music culture. Formed by Ray Arroyo, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, the band traces its origins to projects like Idle Hands and Nobody's Heroes, where Arroyo first honed his craft. Teaming up with bassist and songwriting partner Kerry Lambert, the duo began their journey with the release of the extended single *Gravity* in 2018. The title track showcased their ability to craft a compelling post-punk sound with an '80s aesthetic, while the bonus track, *Angelina,* garnered additional attention.
A pivotal moment came after Ray attended a Twin Tribes show in Los Angeles, leading to a connection with San Antonio-based producer Charlie Vela. The collaboration culminated in the 2019 EP "Reticent," featuring standout tracks like "Up in Heaven," "Dark of the Lake," and a haunting cover of Joy Division’s "Shadowplay." With Charlie’s expert production, the EP captured a darker, polished sound that resonated with fans of the genre.
The global shutdown in 2020 became a creative period for Ray, resulting in a wealth of new material and the release of The XRAY5’s debut album, "Inverse," in December of that year. Tracks such as "Corners," "Unsatisfied," and "Songs on the Radio"—some produced by Charlie Vela and others self-produced—cemented their reputation as torchbearers of post-punk revivalism.
In 2021, the band expanded their lineup, recruiting drummer and studio musicians, in addition to guitarist Rick Marz to film a live concert event directed by Matthew Knox of The Antennae. The collaboration was so successful that Rick joined The XRAY5 full-time. That year also saw the release of their acclaimed cover of The Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way," which marked a shift toward a more refined sonic identity.
The XRAY5’s second EP, "Requiem," was released in July 2022 as a heartfelt tribute to Ray’s late mother. Featuring emotionally charged tracks like "Not Too Kind," "Nothing Lasts Forever," and "The Pain," the EP was supported by a music video for "Not Too Kind," filmed on the iconic Santa Monica Pier.
By November 2023, the band unveiled their sophomore album, "Elegy," through Los Angeles artist collaborative label, Hush Ltd. The 8-track LP featured standout songs like "Boston," "Your Memory," "Lonely Place," and "Miles Away." The video for "Slither," tied to an independent film project, further showcased the band's artistic versatility.
In 2024, The XRAY5 maintained their momentum with a string of singles—"Bright," "Strange Girl," and "Manipulations"—culminating in the release of the EP "Wither." The 6-song collection included collaborations with dark wave artists Fevr "Forever Damning Me" and Kyd Barrett lending vocals to "Dark Disco", channeling the atmospheric energy of Los Angeles’ vibrant club scene.
With a dynamic sound that fuses their post-punk roots with modern dark wave influences, The XRAY5 continue to captivate audiences, both live and in the studio, as they carve their unique path in the contemporary music landscape.
